End of year report PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jerry Dugdale

Dear ServeDirect supporters - we trust you had a great Christmas and we wish you a very happy New Year for 2011.

Countdown to opening

We are pleased to report that we are still on programme to open the new school by 7th February, the start of the new academic year. The site has been hectic with up to 50 people on site at any one time. There have been lots of ups and downs but overall we now have a great team of builders who are very proud of what they are achieving. Bearing in mind that everything is being built by hand, the scale of what is being built is astounding - especially in such a short time frame. All the latest news, blogs and pics are posted on this website (www.servedirect.org) so keep clicking regularly. Also, please consider recommending the site to your friends to help us widen our support base. [ if you login to our site and you have a facebook account, you can press the FB button to recommend us to all your friends ]

It has been interesting to see the reaction of people visiting us from other projects in Uganda - they all have been taken aback by the quality and speed of what is being built as well as the cost - some other projects are spending at least 10 times the amount for similar results. It has become obvious that we have a unique development model which we may be able to roll out and help other projects with in the future.

Students at the new site

Students visit new school site

The students at Wobulenzi Town Academy were recently taken to visit their new school site at nearby Lukomera. On arrival they were given a tour of the new premises which are nearing completion, and they were treated to pots of pineapple and bananas before the walk back to Wobulenzi.

Here are some of their reactions after seeing the new WTA site for the first time...

  • "For me.. I was as much surprised and felt like flying! And my friend thought so and they were much more surprised than me."      -   Godfrey S1
  • " At first I wanted to transfer to any other school but since the buildings are so amazing I will inform my mother to allow me to come to Lukomera"
  • "Plan to come to our new site Lukomera - it’s amazing."       -  Ivan S1

Team October 2010

There have been so many highlights…. Each day, members of the team were taking 2/5 lessons in the timetable, with the aim of offering different subjects and activities to the normal lessons. Given that each lesson lasts 100 minutes and that the smallest group was about 95, this is quite a challenge! (The WTA teachers are extremely gracious and tolerant of our invasion and our unusual teaching styles)

On Thursday, Ian and I went round various health centres and met AMREF, an NGO based at the Health Centre in Luwero, who are friends of ours - mainly dealing with with public health support via Village Health Teams (VHTs). AMREF had showed half the school an HIV awareness DVD back in June, and we had followed up to get the rest of the school to see another one 2 weeks ago, with a view to HIV counselling and testing in the future.  They have very kindly lent us their projector and tv, so we will be able to show the ServeDirect DVD tonight, and also a first for them - a little light entertainment... either Finding Nemo or Happy Feet!  This is because Judith had taught them about Antarctica and all about penguins!

Dear All,

Team arrived

All is well in Wobulenzi and when we left at about 6pm, everyone had just come off site and back from school, happy and positive but very tired after Day Two. From my point of view it is great having others around to share the teaching load and the students are really enjoying ("it was fantastic" they said) the chance to do some sport, art and more varied activities.
